Day 4 activities

Looking at Bacteria Under a Microscope:

The children learned the types of bacteria living in a lagoon water treatment system and then viewed some of those bacteria under a microscope. This bacteria was taken from water samples from the local lagoon treatment facility which the children visited later this day.

Logan Lagoon Waste Water Treatment Facility Visit:

The children visited the local lagoon waste water treatment facility and they learned the process by which the waste water coming from Logan and the surrounding towns in the Cache valley area gets treated. They took a tour in the lagoons and learned how long it takes for the water to leave and go to the irrigation canal nearby. The children also gathered samples from the water output of the facility and performed chemistry tests on the water. One of the students said in their journal "Going to the lagoon, it shows me that there is much more to the world than we thought".

Hyrum Waster Water Treatment Plant Visit:

The children also visited the Hyrum mechanical treatment plant and saw the differences between the process used in a mostly natural treatment facility such as the lagoons as compared to a mostly mechanical facility like the Hyrum plant. The children also gathered samples from the water output of the facility and performed chemistry tests on the water. One of the students wrote in the journal: "Today I leanrd about different swewage systems, Natural and industrial. I believe the industrial one is the best, it cleans the water the best even though it costs more money." Another student answered the questions, Before today I thought : "That all waste water was disposed of after it was flushed" but now I think "It can be recycled MANY times."

Creating Posters and Presentations:

Having collected data all week, the children split into their groups and worked for a few hours on creating both a poster presentation and a slide presentation about what they learned throughout the week. One of the students said when asked to answer the questions Before today I thought: "Making a poster in powerpoint would be hard" and what would you tell a friend about today's activities? "I made a poster!"
