Day 2 activities

Natural Watersheds:

The childrenlearned how to perform chemistry tests to gauge water quality as well as collecting and identifying macroinvertebrates. In this case the bugs that live in the water. They learned how collecting those bugs let's themgauge water quality. Those tests took place in multiple locations including upstream on Logan river, downstream at first dam park and then after the river passes through Logan in Rendezous park and Cutler reservoir. Quotes from the daily journals included: "Water isn't as clean as it looks. How to find out the pH level, hardness, alakinity, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phospate and turbidity levels of water. I also learned about different types of bugs." and another quote answering the question, Before today I thought "There were no bugs in the lakes" but now I think "Bugs can stay alive in lakes."But, before all that: Bug Spray!!! Other quotes included"I would tell my friends that it was a blast to hunt for bugs and look at them." and another quote: "All of the testing and taking notes made science so much more fun for me. It is exciting to study creatures and water".

Visiting a beaver dam:

The children visited a beaver dam at the local Wal-Mart and learned about how beavers can construct dams and how this affects the environment around it and how the local Wal-Mart management decided not to interfere with what the beavers are doing so long as water flow is controlled and wouldn't flood the surrounding area. This allowed for an ecosystem to develop in the area. One of the quotes from the children was: "I never thought about beavers and how they are engineers."

E-Coli Sampling and Incubation:

Having collected samples from multiple location, the children placed the sample in specialized containers and put those in an incubator and will check them a day later to see if any bacteria was in the water and if so what kinds of bacteria.
